History:

Darby's canon takes place on a world which is largely similar to Earth in terms of modernity! The names for countries and their boundaries are a bit different, but it's very very similar.

SO YES. Human history was going on all nice and hunky-dory when one day, people began to develop special abilities. This could be anything from self-regeneration to levitation, telekinesis, or plant-empathy. These people would eventually come to be called "Users" and for a long time there was persecution, subjugation, public outcry, civil war, etc. Things were not good as regular every day people began to realize that Users were not only in existence, but sometimes less than benevolent. Fast-forward seventy years or so and the world has become a much different place; cities are spread-out and far between, international travel is restricted, trade has declined. The most prosperous and advanced cities are either owned and operated by The System or based off of it's model.

The System is a technologically-advanced city designed to contain a population of both regular humans and User alike. Strict law is enforced when it comes to Users: they are required by law to register once their ability emerges, therefor becoming a Registered User. These users are duty-bound to follow and enforce all the rules of System and in turn, catch Unregistered Users who are labelled publicly as criminals and dangerous (regardless of their age or ability). Registered Users are given high salaries and provided with living arrangements and are encouraged to participate in the capture of Unregistered Users, with varying reward tiers. There are many benefits to joining System, but some Users see it is signing over their freedom. A Registered must perform any duty asked of them by System regardless of their own personal desires. You cannot retire from System.

Most Users emerge in their late teens and are expected to be reported immediately. While Unregistered Users are vilified and made out to be extremely dangerous, Registered System Users are praised as heroes and keepers of the peace. In this way System works to control and regulate Users. Especially the dangerous ones.

Darby himself comes from a System City which would be considered highly advanced and prosperous. System rules are absolute, most Districts are maintained, and the level of Unregistered Users tends to be on the low side. The surrounding geography enables plenty of cultivation and for the most part, it is a self-sustained city. Darby was born and raised there and lived a relatively normal life until he discovered his power at the age of 17.

While on his way to home Darby happened to pass by a crowded intersection he didn't normally frequent. As he waited for the cross-signal he noticed a girl stepping out into the path of an oncoming car. Without thinking about it he ran out to try and stop her; there was no way he'd reach her in time, and that was when he made his first Jump--saving the girl and realizing he was a User. Although initially grateful for her rescue, onlookers' attitudes changed when they realized he was not a Registered; Darby tried (and failed) to explain what had happened and wound up bolting from the scene. He didn't return home right away however, but the next day. By that time System was waiting for him and when he saw this, Darby panicked. He was pursued but eventually managed to escape.

When he tried to return home his parents would have nothing to do with him. His panic had been seen as resistance by System and he was deemed an Unregistered unless he turned himself in. Darby didn't.

As a result he was forced to drop out of school and completely disassociate himself from every normal person he'd known. He could no longer stay in the same District nor frequent any place he'd ever been before. Slowly, Darby retreated to less and less maintained Districts until he found himself living the life of a squatter in a contemned apartment building several years later. Jobless except for when he managed to scrounge up work, Darby tries to lead as solitary a life as he can manage. He isn't ranked high enough on the Bounty Charts to warrant looking over his shoulder constantly but he wants to avoid as much trouble as possible.

From time to time he finds himself contacted by a man named Dr. Karl Royer, a supporter to Unregistered Users and the founder of Enhanced Development on normal humans. Jobs like this tend to include aiding and/or facilitating the escape of those the good Doctor assists.

For the most part Darby tries just to make do.

Personality:

By nature Darby is basically just a Good Guy. He's got a good, level head on his shoulders and tries to keep to himself, mostly to avoid causing other people problems due to his status as an Unregistered User. He doesn't look-before-leaping when it comes to being impulsive about his own matters, but when it concerns other people requiring help he tends to be a bit more gung-ho about it. He's not the type that's able to abandon someone in trouble and he tends to wander on the side of an "older bro" sort of character. He feels responsible for people he's met and sort of helped on their way; he tends to check up on them and make sure they've got themselves going alright. He's also the sort who tries to pay back his debts no matter how much he dislikes a person; it's just the right thing to do, but he doesn't obsess over owing people things. He's just a Get It Done sort of guy.

Most of the time he can come off a bit serious and because of that distant, but really he enjoys having friends. Even if sometimes he feels bad to inconvenience them with his current "criminalesque" status. He's more relaxed around other Unregistered Users than those without abilities but in general he spends more time around those without; in part because it's nice to see what a "normal" life would have been like if he hadn't become a User. It's nostalgic for him and he enjoys how simple it is, and because of that most of his part-time or jack-of-all-trades work tends to be for regular everyday people.

Darby dislikes using his power for anything but necessity. He knows he's got two perfectly good legs that work just fine and there's no point in endangering himself by being slothful or by alerting anyone to his status as Unregistered. He doesn't see the point in being excessive with them and for the most part remains less practised than he could be with his power. He's only ever used it to run or help those in need.

That being said, Darby honestly wishes he'd never developed them because of how he's had to cut himself off from his former life when they appeared. He's not a fan of the way System runs and doesn't agree with the way Unregistered Users are treated by those Registered or otherwise working for System. Likewise he knows that not every User is a good person regardless of which "side" they're on. He'd rather have a simple life and be able to enjoy it with people he cares about. He is a little jaded when it comes to other Users who don't sit quietly and finds them annoying, but his first reaction to any sort of conflict is to avoid it. He doesn't want to give or receive trouble from anyone else and he'd rather just be left alone than have something heaped onto him.

...Of course once the heaping's done it's not as if he won't see it through to the end. If something's pushed onto him he tends to wind up doing it anyway just because he doesn't want to think about what negative results refusing might cause (usually he winds up looking after people without volunteering for it).

That all said, again, Darby's generally a good-hearted guy who doesn't mind living a simple life...even if it's lonely and he can be awkward for it. He doesn't get to spend a lot of time talking with people and it shows in some of his interactions. It's hard for him to find a balance of not getting involved while also wanting to spare others the misfortune he's experienced in his own.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:

Jump: The name of Darby's ability-class! He is a Teleport able to "jump" from location to location so long as he can a) see clearly where he is going b) the area he Jumps to is within 30 metres of where he is. Velocity, speed, and inertia all carry over through Jumps. The number of times he can do this is limited to how far he travels; he exerts physical effort to Jump so multiple teleports in a short time tend leave him panting and tired. Many short Jumps are possible, but longer ones at max range are limited to about 2-3.

Weaknesses: He can't Jump is he can't clearly see where he wants to land (ie. he could not jump from one level of a fire escape to another by looking down through the grating without risk of Jumping part of himself into an object). His Jumps are also limited by distance (30m), and the number he can perform decreases depending on how far he travels per.

Physically, Darby isn't a fighter. He can generally hold his own in the short-term but he prefers to run away.

Network/Action Spam Sample: Here orrrr here is also good :>
Prose Log Sample:

"And in other news, it was discovered earlier this morning that the Unregistered Wanted's Number Four was apprehended through the efforts of System's own Retrieval Team. Registered User Rank 1 made another perfect capture this morning as the condemned was seen in District Seven. Authorities managed to subdue Number Four after Rank 1's brilliant display of heroism. Number Four has been safely transported..."

"Hah! Serves the guy right for bein' trouble in the first place... Before you know it they'll have cleaned up all those Unregistered creeps an' we'll be done with it. Right part-timer?"

Darby blinked, slowly lifting his head so he could glance over his shoulder at the middle-aged construction worker beside him. Following the other's gaze led him to the large holo-screen floating above them, projecting images of the altercation from earlier in the day.

"Oh... I guess." It was as non-committal a response as he could manage without tipping one way or another. He tried to make a point of doing that; it caused a lot less trouble down the road and honestly looking at the Rankings and Headlines for the day never served him any sort of comfort.

"You guess?? Come on! Didn't you know all the crap we're cleaning up here is because of one of those freaks?? Some nut in the top-thirty crashed through here. Hear it was an Armour-type." His coworker snorted and rubbed a thumb across his nose. "We're better off without 'em."

A faint shrug was the best Darby offered for several moments, heaving a sack of packed debris over one shoulder. "On the other hand it made work for us. So...there's that. I'd rather have something at the end of the day than nothing." Money put food in his stomach after all and that was good enough for him. His coworker still scoffed some.

"Gah, same here. Still..."

Whatever he said next was lost as Darby made his way over to the large collection bin sitting on the back of a dump truck, already mostly full with their efforts. It would be a long day, and longer if the conversation kept up like that. Have a quiet job for once would be nice but landing this one had been a stroke up luck he couldn't have passed up if he wanted to. When the job offer had come up it'd come with an extra tidbit with all-too-familiar writing. Darby had a feeling that his coworker's complaints would be the least of his worries by the end of the day. Royer's writing tended to be pretty distinct.

"Hey! Hurry on back here, I've got another load for you to take over!" His 'friend' again. No time to day-dream he supposed. At the very least, he'd finally have something in his wallet by the end of the day.

"Be right there..."
